Message from the CEO – September 2024

Sep 09, 2024

Dear Valued Members and Stakeholders,

I’m thrilled to share the latest updates from the First Nations Market Housing Fund (FNMHF). As we continue to strengthen our efforts to support First Nations housing and community development, the past few months have been both eventful and inspiring.

In July, we had the privilege of attending the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) Annual General Assembly (AGA) in Montreal, held on the traditional territory of the Kanien’kehá Nation. This gathering brought together leaders and partners from across the country, offering a meaningful opportunity to strengthen our relationships. Events like the AGA are invaluable, as they allow us to connect directly with communities, engage in meaningful dialogue, and showcase our ongoing initiatives.

One of the highlights of the quarter was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the First Nations Financial Management Board (FMB) in Montreal. This collaboration marks a significant step towards enhancing support for First Nations communities. The signing ceremony, attended by Michael Rice, Chair of the Fund, and Harold Calla, Executive Chair of the FMB, solidified a framework for our two organizations to work together. By fostering information sharing and joint efforts, we are committed to improving the wellbeing of First Nations communities across the country.

Also in July, an important milestone was reached with the FNMHF working committee meeting, held on July 30 and 31 at the CMHC’s headquarters. This technical committee is dedicated to developing the business case for transferring control of the Fund to First Nations. A key aspect of this transition is the creation of a membership model that will be open to both First Nation organizations and individuals.

August brought us a wonderful opportunity to come together as a team. On August 14th, the FNMHF staff and their families gathered in Akwesasne for our annual Summer Staff Gathering. We enjoyed a scenic boat ride along the beautiful St. Lawrence River, followed by games, a barbecue, and plenty of laughter. These moments of connection and camaraderie are crucial in strengthening the bonds that allow us to continue delivering on our mission with passion and dedication.

Looking ahead, we are excited to expand our outreach efforts at the Forward Summit East in September and the Forward Summit West Coast in October. These summits present a unique opportunity for us to engage with a younger audience and share the exciting developments happening at the Fund.

Finally, I want to emphasize our ongoing commitment to gathering feedback from our communities. We are actively holding engagement sessions to gather views on a new membership model being proposed for the Fund, the transfer of care and control of the Fund to First Nations, as well as potential new products and services. If you wish to participate, registration details can be found in our September 2024 newsletter.

I urge you to stay connected with us, follow us on social media and talk to our team about the exciting opportunities and resources ahead. The Fund is committed to helping you and making your communities thrive. We are excited to work with you, support your goals, and work together to build a better future for everyone.

Sincerely,

Travis Seymour, FCPA, FCGA, MBA, CAFM
